Business & Community

We are proud of being local to the Wairarapa, and working with other local businesses and orgasnisations within the region; so much so that all of our contractors are Wairarapa-based.

We are truly passionate about our community, conservation, and education which is why we have joined up with Pukaha National Wildlife Centre is sponsoring an Education Specialist.

FTF donate a lot of time in schools talking about careers in Forestry as well as taking many pupils out into the forest to experience first hand what a Forester does.

Our Work With Pūkaha

FTF joined up with Pūkaha in 2019 to sponsor an Education role to teach school children about conservation and commercial forestry. Pūkaha and FTF both share the same passion about education and encouraging students to get involved in careers in Forest, Bird, and Conservation is a great fit for us.

FTF is very excited about being part of this programme and look forward to a long-lasting relationship with Pūkaha. For more information https://pukaha.org.nz/education

Wairarapa Foodbanks

In collaboration with FTF stakeholders, we have established a meaningful arrangement that enables our dedicated teams to carry out controlled culling of deer within designated forestry locations.

This partnership ensures that these efforts not only contribute to sustainable wildlife management but also make a significant impact in supporting local communities. Through this initiative, the deer harvested by our teams are processed and donated to foodbanks across the Wairarapa region. This provides high-quality, nutritious meat to families and individuals in need, fostering food security and strengthening the well-being of our community.

We take pride in knowing that our work goes beyond environmental stewardship and extends directly to helping people in our local area, creating a positive cycle of care and support.

Awards

We are proud of our accomplishments including the Harvesting Micro Innovation Challenge 2024, sponsored by the ‘Te Mahi Ngahere i te Ao Hurihuri – Forestry Work in the Modern Age’ Primary Growth Partnership led by Forest Growers Research Limited.

We designed and produced the “Blaze-It Bridge“. Classified as a mobile, reusable drift deck, our bridge allows for all flow levels with unimpeded fish passage and a low flood/damming risk. Our current design uses recycled steel, with higher bearers to allow for more flow underneath. Poles have been added to permit trucks to drive over the bridge safely even when it is fully submerged.

Spark Business Hub Wairarapa Awards 2024

The Spark Business Hub Wairarapa Awards provide a platform for local businesses and organisations to share their stories, celebrate their achievements, and gain recognition for their brand, team, and stakeholders.

Farman Turkington Forestry was honoured to be crowned winners of the Harcourts Hamil Realty Innovation Award, as well as the Supreme Award winner. This recognition came in light of our pioneering projects, including the ‘Blaze It’ Bridges – and the Ōterei River Restoration Project, New Zealand’s first of its kind.

Launched in 2022, the Ōterei project saw the establishment of 30 hectares of native forest species around the waterway. Ongoing monitoring focuses on improving water quality, increasing native bird numbers, and maintaining a robust trapping program.
